"You Belong Here: A Story of Learning, Struggling, and Becoming" By Estefani Gordillo


“Sometimes I wonder if I am just not meant for college,” the student said quietly, sitting across from the school counselor. The counselor leaned forward gently and replied, “What makes you feel that way?” The student hesitated before admitting, “I study, I try, but it feels like everyone else understands things faster than I do.” The counselor nodded with understanding and said, “You’d be surprised how many students sit in that exact chair and say those same words.” The student looked up, a little confused, and asked, “Really? It always feels like I’m the only one struggling.” The counselor smiled softly and responded, “Struggling doesn’t mean you don’t belong here, it means you care enough to keep trying.” After a quiet moment, the student exhaled and said, “I guess I never thought about it like that.” The counselor gave an encouraging nod and reminded them, “Remember this: ‘The fact that you’re still here, still trying, means you’re stronger than you think.’”

College can feel really overwhelming sometimes, especially when students start to doubt themselves or compare themselves to others. In moments like that, having people who support you can make a big difference. Whether it’s a counselor, tutor, professor, friend, or family member, talking to someone can remind students that they are not alone. A good support system can help students stay motivated when things get tough. Sometimes all it takes is a simple conversation to help someone feel a little better or see things differently. Hearing encouragement from someone else can help students believe in themselves again. Struggle should not define someone’s future.

It’s also important to remember that struggling in college is normal. The struggle is what makes all the hardwork worthwhile. Everyone has moments where things feel difficult. What matters most is not giving up and continuing to move forward, even if progress feels slow. With support and determination, students can get through challenges and reach their goals. The most important part is recognizing that it is ok to have challenges and to not be good at everything. There is always opportunity to grow and learn, so it is important to have a growth mindset where we can allow ourselves to improve in areas and show grace for ourselves.

No matter what stage in life you are in, it’s important to remember a few key qualities that help you reach your goals and make it to the finish line:

  1. Self Discipline: Whether it’s changing your habits, sticking to a routine, or trying to improve your mindset, you have to be able to hold yourself accountable. Without discipline, it’s easy to lose focus and give up before reaching your goals.

  2. Self-Regulation: We have to practice recognizing our emotions and not let them take over. Everyone feels overwhelmed or frustrated at times, but learning how to manage those feelings helps you stay on track and push through challenges.

  3. Self-Identity: Remember that an essay or a discussion board does not define a human. This is necessary knowledge you need to know that aligns with your career. Your identity should come from your interests, values, and the career path you’re working toward. When you understand your purpose, it becomes easier to stay motivated and complete your work.
