I love dogs; I grew up around them and owned one for 13 years. These furry companions make day-to-day life interesting and less lonely. The reason why this article exists is because I recently took in a stray puppy whom I have named Luna and while she is my world and I can’t imagine life without her, she has completely flipped my life upside down and requires so much time and attention. Taking my eyes off her for a quarter of a second can result in an unsanctioned number 1 and occasionally number 2. Sudden silence is terrifying and footwear is subject to theft and destruction. Dramatics aside, it is important to know the impact and responsibilities that come with bringing home a puppy.
The first thing to consider before you even think about adoption is the financial cost. Puppies cost a lot of money; they require food, toys, training supplies, vaccines, and teething treats. Other additional costs could include spay/neuter procedures, puppy trainers, and home repair costs.
The second consideration you need to make is whether you have the time commitment needed for your pup’s socialization and training. Puppies come with all sorts of unwanted behaviors such as relieving themselves in the house and chewing on furniture and fixtures. You will most likely need to create a new routine for you and your puppy to follow. You need to constantly have an eye on your pup in order to correct bad behavior and to keep them safe.
The biggest thing to consider before getting a puppy is how mentally and emotionally draining raising a puppy can be. The number of times I have said the phrases, “LUNA NO” and, “Aw Luna, come on” are in the thousands at this point. They WILL bite you, steal your shoes, pee on your carpet, and make you cry.

All that being said if you still decide to bring a puppy into your life, you’ll at least have an idea of what is to come. And I will say that in spite all of what I have said, I love my puppy with my all my heart and I wouldn’t trade my time with her for the world. As trying and exhausting as raising Luna has been, it has been worth it to see her thrive and grow. Just remember, raising puppies is not for the weak.
