September 2024 "Don’t Be Shy ... Socialize!" by Halenna Castillo

Hello, new students! I know you’re all feeling a mix of emotions right now-scared, worried, anxious or maybe even chill. But don’t sweat it, we’ve all been there. Whether you’re fresh out of high school, coming back for more, or just taking a few classes, we’re all here for the same reason: to secure a better future. As a returning student at Reedley College myself, let me drop the best piece of advice to help you feel at ease.

My one advice is socializing:)

We’re all humans, and we crave interactions. Trust me, those other students are just as nervous and shy as you are. College isn’t as scary as you think. Its actually comforting to know you’re not alone in feeling out of place. Don’t be afraid to say hi or start a conversation. Making friends in class makes the whole experience way more fun and exciting. Now, I know some of you might be introverts or just not into socializing , and that’s totally cool. I get that it can be draining to put yourself out there and talk to people. But hey, give it a try. You never know, the person you strike up a conversation with could become your bestie or more.

I know a lot of you are just waiting for someone else to start a conversation. Instead of waiting, be the first to make a move! A simple “hi” or even asking questions about the class are great ways to start! Not only will you make new friends, but socializing also helps reduce feelings of loneliness, depression, and anxiety. By releasing dopamine and oxytocin, which improves ones mood, it can also help lower cortisol, which is related to stress. Not only that, but socializing can give you a sense of meaning and happiness by talking to people and making friends. Your self esteem will boost, and the people you talk to who can potentially be your friends can become amazing emotional support systems. College and life in general can be tough, but being able to share that with friends can make the stress and difficult situations more bearable, which helps greatly in college life.

Now listen up! Apart from making your brain sharp, socializing can be a real game-changer for your future career. Taking nursing, for instance, You have to able to chat with your patients and build those social skills. And let’s not forget about our college life and beyond. We stress so much about how others see us, but guess what? Everyone’s human, and they’re probably overthinking just like yourself. Don’t lose that human connection, make a friend in class, trust me, you won’t regret it.
