This year, we are celebrating a special event at our tutor expo: the 10th anniversary. Therefore, it is a good time to look back on our Reading/Writing Center’s history to find 10 Years of Legacy, Learning, and Success. This research has not only shown the passage of time but, more importantly, highlighted the lessons that, as a tutoring center, we have learned along the way. This research examined how being a tutor can equip you with the tools to follow your path and succeed in your career. Guided by the theme “Back to the Future,” we reflected on how our former tutors and directresses, through their life testimony, have shaped our present achievements and will continue to influence our future direction. Looking back, we recognized that growth is never accidental; it results from consistent effort, strong values, and shared purpose.
Over the past decade, one of the most remarkable lessons our tutoring center has learned is the true value of perseverance. Success, as we have come to understand, is not the result of luck or convenience, but of sustained effort and commitment. Through an interview with Luis Morales, a former tutor who now serves as a counselor at Reedley College, we gained meaningful insight into this reality. His journey reflects the experience of many who have been part of our program: “growth is often shaped by challenges rather than comfort.”
Luis revealed that his journey was marked by obstacles, including moments of doubt, multiple responsibilities, and situations that demanded emotional and mental resilience. Rather than let these challenges overcome him, he saw them as opportunities to grow by changing his perspective. He focused on learning from his struggles and seeking lessons. His story reminds us that perseverance involves more than enduring hardships; it's about making the decision to keep moving forward intentionally, facing difficulties, and seeing, at the same time, how those challenges shape his character, boost his discipline, and build his confidence.
Alongside resilience, another quality that Luis expresses he perfected as a tutor was the sense of responsibility. Being a tutor is not just about mastering a specific subject; it is about understanding the impact one's influence has on others. Tutors are responsible for guiding students not only academically but also personally. This circumstance demands that tutors be continuously prepared and exhibit good manners. Responsibility teaches us that our actions influence the success and confidence of those we serve. Together, perseverance/resilience and responsibility have shaped the identity of our tutoring department over the past ten years. These virtues have helped convert personal and institutional challenges into lessons and efforts into achievements. As we look toward the future, these virtues remain essential. They remind us that true success is built through commitment and a shared dedication to growth.
As we look toward the future, we understand that legacy is not measured only by accomplishments but also by the character we build along the way. The past ten years have taught us that perseverance, responsibility, collaboration, vision, integrity, respect, and leadership are not just ideals; they are the virtues that shape lasting success.
