Young adults must be aware of the world we live in today to gain a basic level of understanding of political viewpoints from different angles. As the United States has grown, political parties have evolved and left marks throughout history, impacting our future. The Democrat and Republican Parties represent two political platforms that influence the US government, and both parties have different perspectives about creating solid economic and financial well-being for the citizens. Both sides get their power from their citizens. We all have a say in devising today's and tomorrow's politics. College students need to be aware and engaged with the formal political processes in today's world so they can be attentive to why specific things happen, such as inflation, or what to expect if one votes for a particular candidate in the elections. As one starts to inform him or herself about politics, one has a better advantage of feeling prepared to do things such as vote because they will feel empowered to choose someone with the same priorities.
Republicans:
Republicans are considered to be more conservative, and they tend to advocate for smaller government. The word “republic” comes from the Latin root “public good” or “public affair.” Conservatism usually means a general tendency to resist change and tolerate social inequality. Such distinctions may include tax reductions to restore the economy and advance individual economic freedom. Today’s Republican party has made it very clear that religion is part of their pitch. Republicans fight for an economy that does not include many government regulations and public welfare programs due to their pursuit of U.S. interests and social stability. Although Republicans tend to be known for having this view today, during the 19th century, they once stood for the intervention of the government to go against slavery. People may come to understand how this drastic change in priorities has undermined Republican policies.
Democrats:
Democrats are considered to be more liberal, and they often advocate for the government to be more involved in social affairs. Liberalism usually is defined as the tendency to embrace change and reject inequality. Democrats typically fight for a safety net for the people (social welfare programs, Medicaid, food stamps, etc.) and tend to advocate for the protection of civil rights and support initiatives through taxation. This party tends to support gun control, environmental protection programs, less strict immigration laws, etc. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the Democratic party has significantly changed. Democrats once supported slavery and opposed civil rights reforms. By the mid-20th century, Democrats favored civil rights and desired more significant government intervention in the economy but not in the private non-economic affairs of citizens. Democrats now tend to be known for a low level of religiosity and a higher emphasis on access to education.
Despite the opposition between parties on current topics, the bottom line is that political parties change over time. As young adults, we must stay informed about what each party prioritizes.
