What better month than October to binge watch Sabrina the Teenage Witch, not to confuse it with Netflix’s version, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. SPOILER ALERT: it lacks the charismatic funk the 1996 version carries. Don’t get me wrong the first 2 seasons were good but don’t ask me about the rest. Sabrina the Teenage Witch is about Sabrina Spellman discovering she comes from a line of witches on her sixteenth birthday. Guided by her aunts, Hilda and Zelda, and even Salem, the magical talking black cat; Sabrina attempts to get her witch license and learn the family secret. Along the way, she encounters many wacky situations in which she relies on magic, meets new friends, and even finds love. This is a seven season series so if you are impatient, don’t worry, you do not need to watch the whole series to enjoy the Halloween episodes listed below to get you into that spooky holiday spirit.
Season 1, Episode 5 — "A Halloween Story" (1996)
When faced with a frightful dilemma, Sabrina realizes she could be in two places at once. Every Halloween, Sabrina’s aunts attend a witches’ coven celebration, however, Harvey (Sabrina’s crush) is throwing a party the same day. Sabrina decides to create a double and sends it off to Harvey’s party, while she goes with her aunts. The double is given 3 phrases so when the party starts dying out, she agrees to something daring that would ultimately ruin the real Sabrina’s high school reputation. During this, the real Sabrina is given a gift from her aunts that allows her to cross the boundary between life and death.
Season 2, Episode 7 — "A River of Candy Corn Runs Through It" (1997)
After Valerie (Sabrina’s best friend) tells the whole school Sabrina is throwing a Halloween party, Sabrina is forced to throw a “normal” party alongside her aunts, even though they had agreed to have a peaceful night. While decorating the house, the furniture becomes alive. In an attempt to fix this, Sabrina’s aunts find that all the stores in the other realm are closed. However, the party must go on, and
as people start showing up, Sabrina’s house becomes more chaotic. There are Halloween carolers knocking, termites eating, and candy corn flowing through a cauldron. Could Sabrina be able to throw the best party? Guess you have to watch to find out.
Season 3, Episode 6 — "Good Will Haunting" (1998)
Invited to Aunt Beulah’s annual Halloween party, Hilda and Zelda have finally ran out of excuses and are forced to attend. Unable to attend the party, Sabrina hosts a “scary” movie marathon after Valerie invited Harvey and Justin (her boyfriend) to Sabrina’s house... again. Just before her aunts leave, Sabrina is gifted a Molly Dolly from Aunt Beulah. To Sabrina’s horror, she discovers the doll is haunted and it has been terrorizing them. In a desperate plea to get the doll to stop, Sabrina turns her double date into a game of hide-and-seek. Meanwhile, the aunts finally meet Aunt Beulah. However, Hilda’s outburst has them running for their lives from psychiatric patients as they have discovered they cannot leave and their powers have been drained. Will Sabrina and her aunts make it out alive?
Season 4, Episode 6 — "Episode LXXXI: The Phantom Menace" (1999)
Is Halloween a state of mind? Or maybe a state of being? Stay tune for the end of this ghastly episode to find out. In search of a job, Sabrina finally gets hired at a coffee house where she is asked to work on Halloween night. Meanwhile, Hilda and Zelda want a scare so they use a time travel clock to invite Edgar Allen Poe for dinner. Tired of immature pranks and hokey horror stuff, Sabrina pays no mind to her aunts’ warning from running from Halloween. On her shift, a customer lets Sabrina know her coffee was strong enough to wake the dead. She throws the batch of coffee down the sewer and literally wakes the dead. The zombies surround the coffee house and break in. How will Sabrina get out of her predicament? Try as you may, you cannot run away from Halloween.
Season 5, Episode 6 — "The Halloween Scene" (2000)
With no plans for Halloween, Salem convinces Sabrina to throw a Halloween bash behind her aunts’ backs to share her enthusiasm for the holiday. Just three days before Halloween, she goes to an other
realm party planner, where she explains that she needs to convince some skeptics (her friends) how fun Halloween can be. When suddenly, Frankenstein becomes available and she orders him for her party. Flashforward to Halloween night, as soon as her friends were about to leave the party, Frankenstein and some ghouls arrive. Sabrina’s lame party turns into the party of year with ghouls from the other realm crashing; including her aunts. Will her aunts put an end to it? Will her friends finally like Halloween? Will Frankenstein make up with his bride? (This question will make sense once you watch this haunting episode.)
Season 6, Episode 4 — "Murder on the Halloween Express" (2001)
All aboard the Halloween Mystery Train where murder’s their business and their business is murder. With Salem’s advice, Sabrina invites her five friends on a murder mystery train but discovers it is an other realm train once they have left the station. After her restroom break, she finds that everyone has been bewitched as their role in the murder; and she is the detective. Unfortunately for her, she is not great at solving mysteries which ironically is the ticket off the train. She interrogates her friends to find their motive for wanting Photographer Kip Kodak (Josh, her boyfriend) dead. She finds that the Countess Admira (Morgan) was deeply, madly in love with the victim until he ended the relationship. She vowed to get revenge but they soon became friends. The maid, Hortense (Roxie), works for the Countess but is horribly mistreated. Professor Augustine Von Claptrap (Miles) was jealous of the Kip because he always gets the girl. The Professor had stolen International tennis star Biff Buffington’s (Harvey) girl. In other words, they all had motive. With the only clues being a missing diamond, a tennis towel, a feather, and dust; Sabrina’s aunts and Salem hop on board to help Sabrina. Will they be able to solve the mystery or will they be stuck on the Halloween Express forever?
