May 2025 Echoes through Time by Luis Barba

I have worked at the Reedley College Reading and Writing Center for a few years, which has taught me many valuable lessons. I want to reflect and share my experiences with you as my final article publication, since I will be graduating!

I began my academic journey here at Reedley College in the Fall of 2019 as a weary freshman with no clue of what to pursue. I settled on majoring in English because I have always been drawn to the art of literature and the power it wields. I found myself deeply enjoying the English courses offered here at Reedley and excelled at my personal reading and writing capabilities. I was eventually referred to be a tutor by a professor of mine, which was an amazing opportunity that has helped me improve as a student and as a person. I started working as a tutor in the Fall of 2021, helping students with English courses and improving my skills. I had never worked a job before working as a tutor, but I was able to develop a strong work ethic through this friendly and academic environment. It has been enlightening working at the RWC with other great tutors and assisting some great minds of the students I have worked with.

As an English tutor, I have gained many insights and participated in several SCCCD Expo conferences over the past few years. These expo conferences are hosted every year and allow tutors from different colleges from State Center to come together and create poster boards and presentations about unique learning based techniques. I have had the privilege of working with my fellow tutors to create presentations that highlight effective teaching methods for students. We have made some fun-themed slides, such as  Back to the Future, AI speed dating, and fun tech modern tools. At the most recent Expo, we created an arcade-themed presentation sharing some game-based learning platforms for students. These expos have been a great part of working as a tutor and have given me many valuable insights.

The best part of my time here at the Reading and Writing Center has been the community. I have met many kind people among my fellow tutors and the students I work with. The RWC fosters this welcoming environment for everyone, and it will always hold a special place in my heart. I have made many meaningful connections that I cherish deeply. I recommend visiting the RWC and becoming part of this community that promotes learning and connection.

Writing articles for the Paper Jam has been a highlight of my time here at the RWC. These articles have been reflective of my interests and my learning. I always try to put a piece of myself in my writing. I have written many articles, which you can find at rwcpaperjam.com, ranging from music recommendations to how to write a love poem!

It has been a great journey working at the Reading and Writing Center over these last few years. I have gained insights that I will take with me, and I have formed many meaningful bonds with others. I want to offer some parting words of wisdom for anyone who might need it.

Always strive to be better and never take education for granted! English can seem daunting, but words hold power and can make real change.

Visit the RWC and become part of this encouraging community.
