    National Library Week 2022

This year is proving to be a more challenging one overall than many had hoped for, and no part of American society has felt it more than jobs which face the public. As we exit the first quarter of 2022, it seems all there is left for an average person to do is prepare for an extended ‘return to normal’ phase. We rely on those who face the public and who educate the public now more than ever. This is why this year’s National Library week is so important. This year the American

    National Sibling Day

Siblings. Sometimes we like them, sometimes we don't. Sometimes we forget they exist and sometimes we wish we could. It can feel as though they are either our greatest enemy or our greatest ally in life—and sometimes both depending on the day. April 10th is National Sibling Day! It's a day similar to Mother's Day or Father's day, that invites us to celebrate the unique bond with our siblings. While sibling relationships are not always as 'picture-perfect' or 'harmonious' as

"Agaricus & the Giants" by Carlos Hernandez

Congratulations to Carlos Hernandez for being of the winners of our Fairy Tale Contest. Enjoy "Agaricus & the Giants" 🍄 Eons after our current era of science, human society had begun to peter out. The human quest to mold the Earth in their image had backfired and conflicts erupted as people scrambled to control what was left of the planet. Gone was the era of man, though not all hope was lost as from the places man once stood grew another, from flesh to dirt, to dirt to… mus

    Holy Month of Ramadan

What is Ramadan? In Islamic culture, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year. This Holy month marks when Allah (or God) gave the first chapters of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him). Muslims follow the lunar calendar, which is based off the phases of the moon, so each year Ramadan falls on a different date. There's a saying by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) about waiting to start the fast until the crescent moon is visible. So, for this year, Ramadan is expected

    Earth Day

It seems like the importance of Earth Day is more relevant than ever as the disastrous effects of climate change become more and more apparent. We should all be aware of what we can do to extend the life of our precious forests, oceans, and ice caps. Since Earth Day’s inception fifty-two years ago, every April twenty-second has been all about making our society take notice of how our actions affect the environment. The first Earth Day in 1970 was a response to the rampant pol

    Kings River Review

Established in 2021, Kings River Review is a biannual journal associated with Reedley College that publishes artwork, short stories, creative nonfiction, and poetry from 2-year community college students from all around the United States. As part of the editing team, I have been able to see behind the scenes and have been both in awe and intimidated by the amount of work that goes into creating this one-of-a-kind publication. An addition that has been made for the upcoming is

Are you planning on entering a career in education? In teaching? Maybe you're curious about what educators are discussing? If so, then you might want to keep reading… (Many of the topics discussed here can be applied across grade levels, from K-12 to higher education, but in this article, I am focusing on higher education). Now, what if education could become more accessible and engaging for all learners? This is the goal of a framework called Universal Design for Learning or

    National Shakespeare Day

William Shakespeare is notably one of the most famous men in history: he was a poet, a playwright, an actor, a businessman, a property manager, and a family man. He lived in an era of tragedy fueled by economic crisis, war, and the plague, and yet, he brought joy and entertainment to the people of England in such a profound way that his work is still some of the most popular works in theater and literature to this day. Some of his most famous plays have been and continue to e

    Remembering the Titanic

April 10, 1912 On April 10, 1912, the Titanic set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. The Titanic was the grandest ship afloat of that time with the most extravagant accommodations, including veranda cafes, a smoking room, restaurant, dining saloon, and a reading and writing room. However, these areas were primarily limited to the wealthy first-class passengers on board. At the opposite end, packed into the lower decks of the Titanic, were t

Lauren Novatne: Interview with Retiring Faculty

Lauren Novatne is an outstanding faculty member from the Physics department here at Reedley College who will soon be retiring at the end of this Spring 2022 semester. She has experienced a life full of challenges and strived through all adversity. Being a faculty member for over 20 years, it seems inconceivable to think about a time when she was not an instructor. She was first inspired to get into teaching when her oldest son Mike went to kindergarten. At the time, she was a

    National California Poppy Day

Eschscholtzia californica, golden poppy, or California poppy are all names that have been given for the celebrated flower on April 6th for National California Poppy Day. The golden poppy was declared the official flower of California, giving it its’ newer name of California poppy, on March 2, 1903. These flowers are delicate and toxic to people and animals. They cannot be plucked to keep in vases; their fragile petals fall apart, and the flower will die quickly once it has be

A Guide to Outside: Greek Mythology and Springtime Blooms

This is the month of April, or Aprilis, which is a Latin word meaning, “to bud.” However, Aprilis is also derived from the Greek Aphrodite. Meaning that this month was named after both budding flowers and the goddess of love and war. Let’s take a step back and take in the changes of the season. According to Greek mythology, Atlas holds the weight of the Heavens upon his back as punishment for leading the titans against Zeus. The Sun is driven across the sky by Helios in his f

    Discovering Film Photography

While digging through the attic, I recently found my father’s old Pentax K1000 film camera. I was instantly intrigued, so I dusted it off, pulled up a few informational YouTube videos, and ordered some 35mm film from Amazon. I was ecstatic when the film arrived, only to discover that I had a lot to learn. With some help from YouTube & my father, I loaded the film and began learning about aperture, f-stop, focus, and lighting. At first, it was overwhelming, but after sending a

    The Benefits of Vitamin C

April 4th is National Vitamin C Day, which was created to educate people on the wonders that vitamin C can do for the body. Vitamin C can lower people’s risk of developing heart disease, and it can also lower a person's blood pressure. It also helps to strengthen a person's immune system, which is why many people overload on foods high in vitamin C during the flu season or when fighting a cold. Most healthcare professionals advise anemic patients to consume vitamin C because
